Tips for Overcoming Fear of STI Testing
Ever dread your annual OB-GYN visit? Afraid of getting tested for STIs, even if you don’t have symptoms? I got you.
Getting tested for STIs can feel scary, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re taking one of @everlywell’s at-home lab tests, or are going in for a regular appointment, here are a few tips to combat that fear:
1. Give yourself space to feel whatever emotions come up before or following your test. If you test positive for an STI, you are not going to unpack all of it in one day, one week, maybe not even in a year. Be patient with yourself.
2. Educate yourself. Ask what you’re being tested for and why. Accurately describe your sex life so you can be sure that you’re tested for the right kinds of STls. Ask your provider for resources, but don’t be afraid to research online, too!
3. Have a “you” day.” Make your testing appointment on a day where you have other fun things going on. Do something that makes you feel confident. Play your favorite hype song (for me, it’s Megan Thee Stallion @theestallion), go to your favorite restaurant, whatever it is - make it so that there’s a reward or something you’re looking forward to on the other side of that STI test.
