Are STIs a Dealbreaker? Insights from Latest Research!

Are STIs always a dealbreaker? Let’s see what the latest research says!

Note: it’s impossible to condense 16 pages of research into ten slides for Instagram. There will be several posts regarding this study.

Several slides review the study participants. While not the biggest pool of participants, this is arguably the most inclusive piece of publish research I’ve seen to date when it comes to research related to STI stigma 🤓

Sanchez, Ringel, & Goldey (2022) explore STI and Stigma: Effects of STI Diagnoses and Sexual/Gender Minority Identity on Perceptions of Potential Partners.

Researchers presented participants with a dating partner (Jamie; they/them pronouns) and asked if various conditions would prohibit them from developing a relationship with Jamie. Researchers also asked participants the open-ended question of, “Why?”

These conditions included: 1) negative for STIs, 2) diagnosed with gonorrhea, 3) diagnosed with HIV, 4) diagnosed with HSV, and 5) untested.

When looking at the graph, Sexual/Gender Minority participants were more likely to state that STIs were NOT dealbreakers than cishet participants.
