Busting Myths: Understanding Herpes Transmission and Stigma

Another day, another myth that I never thought that I’d have to bust.

You’re not going to get herpes just by hanging out with someone who has it. You’re not going to get herpes by breathing the same air.

To this same effect, just because your sexual partner(s) has/have herpes, whether oral or genital, doesn’t mean that you’re guaranteed to also test positive. Is it possible? Yes. Is it definite or guaranteed? No. There are so many variables from sexual activities, antivirals, barrier methods, biology, and the like that just don’t always equate to transmission.

Stop treating people with herpes like they’re untouchables. Stop treating people with herpes like they’re inhuman, because herpes is literally one of the most human things in the world.
