The Reality of Pregnancy & Childbirth in America: What You Need to Know
e need to start being more vocal about what pregnancy and childbirth look like in America—especially under this Trump administration.
I came across this thread from @jjfitzgeraldmd this week and it reminded me to reflect on my own understandings and education around pregnancy. No, I don’t want kids, but it doesn’t mean I haven’t thought about the impact.
Abstinence-only health education promotes avoidance during adolescence, framing pregnancy as a “bad” or “immoral” outcome. Simultaneously and socially reinforced, pregnancy and childbirth is advertised as “biological destiny” and an expected life milestone.
Because of this, a lot of people DON’T get all of the information they need about the realities of pregnancy and childbirth in this country. This post isn’t about instilling fear or dissuading you from having kids if that’s what you choose—it’s about confronting the harsh reality of pregnancy and childbirth in America: this country doesn’t care if you survive.
📊The US has the highest maternal mortality rate among high-income countries
📊84% of maternal deaths are preventable (the leading cause? Mental health issues)
📊Black women are nearly 3x more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications
Postpartum care is virtually non-existent. While other countries like France offer up to 20 postpartum pelvic therapy sessions as standard care, the US offers a whopping standard 6-week checkup. This leaves many feeling confused and isolated as they navigate their physical recovery and emotional health.
As the landscape of reproductive care likely declines under this administration, it’s crucial to understand the full scope of pregnancy and childbirth.
If you’re thinking of having kids in the near future, please consider the following as you make your decision:
📌Familiarize yourself with your state’s abortion laws
📌Learn about your pelvic floor and the impact of pregnancy early
📌Review your insurance and start asking questions about postpartum care.
