Misinformation Alert: The Truth Behind STI Myths in TikTok and Hollywood

‼️Misinformation Alert‼️

From TikTok to Hollywood, STI information isn’t always accurately portrayed in popular media.

I recently shared how misinformation and willful ignorance contribute to health stigmas in a recent Substack. These two presentations at ID Week 2024 further solidify my points.

Most young people are searching for information on TikTok and IG. These researchers analyzed 40 TikTok videos (excluding medical professionals and pharma companies) to assess for misinformation.

The videos had an average of 7500 shared and 139,000 likes.

Researchers found that misinformation about STIs is common on TikTok, especially when it comes to treatment and transmission. While films presented STIs more accurately, they tended to over-exaggerate the risks of STIs (for example, death).

This is just another reminder to be mindful of your sources, especially on social media. Even people who may have the best intentions, may be presenting inaccuracies or false claims.
