For Aspiring Sexuality Professionals: 7 Questions to Ask Before Graduate School

hinking of applying to #gradschool ? These are 7-must ask questions before you take the leap!!

While this post is designed for aspiring spicy professionals, these questions are applicable to any field and any continuing education program.

1. What are your career goals? Figure out what they are, and what types of degrees or certifications they require. For example, seeking a career as a therapist necessitates an advanced degree. Check out the ethics and positions of the various governing bodies (like, for social workers, marriage and family therapists, psychologists, etc.) and see if anyone feels more like a fit for you.

2. How much does the total program cost? Not just one semester, or one year, look at the cost of the entire program. Are you able to pay any as-you-go or upfront? Or will you have to take out loans?

3. Have you considered the hidden costs? For example, Widener’s program has classes on certain weekends. How much will it cost you to get there? Will you need to relocate entirely?

4. Will you be working while in school? If so, make sure the program you select offers flexibility to balance work and academics. It may also be a good idea to check with your employer to see if they offer any tuition reimbursement for related coursework.

5. How will you take care of YOU? Burnout is common, and it’s best to prepare in advance. Think about how you’ll maintain self-care and what coping strategies you can lean to when times get tough. Making space for both joy AND rest is important!

6. Have you done research beyond the schools’ websites? A school’s website will highlight its best features, but it’s important to dig deeper than marketing materials. Talk to grads of the program, and any faculty. Approach this process like you’re “dating” the school and be intentional with any questions you ask.

7. Have you considered non-degree options? If you’re unsure about grad school, or something about applying just doesn’t feel quite right, explore certification programs or other specializations.
