The CDC Updated Its Treatment Guidelines for STIs: Here's What You Should Know
The @cdcgov updated its STI Treatment Guidelines. Here is a brief summary of the updates, per the CDC (2021).
1. Language Shift from STD to STI (which is HUGE from my perspective)
2. Updated treatment recommendations for clinicians when treating chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and pelvic inflammatory disease
3. Testing recommendations for genitals herpes! The CDC now recommends two-step serological testing for diagnosis genital herpes
4. Treatment recommendations for specific populations, as well as situations including sexual assault
5. Testing information for FDA cleared tests
6. Expanded risk factors when testing for syphilis in pregnant patients
7. Vaccine recommendations for HPV
8. Universal screening for hepatitis c
This is an overview of the changes to the 2021 Guidelines. I am still working through the guidelines myself and will hopefully have more to add in the future. Until then, I think it is important to share with you all as some of these are huge wins on the journey to destigmatize STIs.
Again, all of this information is from the CDC website, so if you’re curious about the changes, there are several documents for you to review there including, but not limited to, the guidelines.
