Challenging the Norms: Reimagining STI Testing and Inclusivity
A “standard” STI panel is typically what is standard for *your* reported sexual behaviors.
The research used to analyze such reported behaviors to determine appropriate STI tests for patients is not always the most accurate or inclusive. Some of this is because research of certain populations does not exist. Or of the existing bodies of research, this is accepted.
In addition to stigmas around STI testing, if an individual does not feel safe with or supported by their provider, they may withhold disclosure of certain behaviors.
With that said, folks might not be able to receive the testing and health knowledge they not only need, but deserve.
While this custom model of self-reporting seems to be the best or most accurate for determining appropriate STI tests at first glance... I ask, “Best for who?”
This model relies on clients’ safety and existing bodies of research—both of which serve a population of privilege.
