The Pros and Cons of Direct-to-Consumer STI Testing: What You Need to Know
The American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association (ASTDA) (2021) just released its position regarding direct-to-consumer STI testing services. The ASTDA “supports this development and recommends actions to ensure consumer protection and empowerment.”
There is no doubt that STI testing kits make regular STI screenings more accessible and convenient for some populations, but it’s important to talk about both the pros and cons.
This is especially an important point of discussion as it relates to access to care, housing, the Internet (8% of Americans lack internet access), and safe spaces.
PROs
•privacy of testing at home and ability to create a safe space
•potentially removes discomfort around sexual embarrassment or shame
•may alleviate fear of stigma
•increases access to care and likelihood of maintaining a sexual health history
•expands STI screening and reduction efforts
CONS
•not accessible to those with lack of access to stable housing
•cost variance from $49 to over $189 depending on companies and tests included
•may not receive appropriate testing
•potential lack of reliability or results
•potential misdelivery of kits
•potential miscommunication to health agencies related to results
•potential misdiagnosis and treatment of infection(s)
I support at-home STI screening kits, but wholeheartedly agree with the ASTDA’s recommendation. Empowering folks to take charge of their sexual health is much-needed, but it begs the question of who are we empowering? And who still needs access to safer, reliable care?
