Strategies for Disclosing Genital Herpes: Insights from Research

A 2003 study entitled, “Determinants of Disclosure of Genital Herpes to Partners,” by Ferrier et al. used qualitative and quantitative data to better understand if and how those with herpes disclosed to their partners. The graphic here reflects the strategies this sample mentions.

It is of importance to note that this was a small sample of 26 women and 24 men at a herpes clinic in London. We could probably determine our own, more inclusive research results if enough people participated on this Instagram account.

So, what are the strategies this sample used to disclose?

48% chose to keep the issue “low key”
34% chose a relaxed environment
18% depends on the person
10% “spontaneous approaches”
12% suggest they go to clinic for check
12% investigate partners’ feelings around herpes
